Motorhome route: the Romantic Road in Germany

The Romantic Road fully lives up to its name: romance is something you will encounter along the way! Think of fairytale castles such as the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, medieval towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber and beautiful wild streams that flow through the wide open landscape. The route, filled with art, culture and history, is perfect to drive with your motorhome! Be sure to bring your cycling and walking shoes as the route is also known as a good cycling and walking route. In 460 kilometres you travel from Würzburg to Füssen. You can take as long as you like, but 14 days is a good starting point to admire all the sights. Of course you can also drive the route in stages, so for example in 3 motorhome journeys of 5 days. The start: Würzburg

Your romantic journey starts in the city of Würzburg. Würzburg is a real university town, which you will certainly notice when you visit one of the many wine bars in the city. The city is really known for its delicious wines. If you come at the right time, you can also experience the famous wine festivals, which are held in spring and summer. One of the city's most famous sights is Residentie Würzburg, which boasts a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the palace you can admire the beautiful Rococo and Baroque style, in the staircase you can even see the largest fresco in the world! Afterwards you can take a nice walk through the beautiful castle gardens, which are also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List - not surprising with such beautiful, green paths full of decoration! Of course you can also have a drink in the beer garden. Other places of interest are the Falkenhaus with its beautiful ornamental facade, which today houses the city library and the tourist centre. A visit to one of the many vineyards in the area is also worthwhile, after all, you are in a real wine city!

Weikersheim

After intermediate stops in Tauberbischofsheim, where it is bursting with beautiful half-timbered houses, Lauda-Köningshofen and the spa town of Bad Mergentheim, you arrive in Weikersheim. The castle of Weikersheim is often compared to Versailles, which is also not strange with the beautiful baroque style of the castle! Apart from the beautiful knights' hall, the castle is especially known for its gardens, because all the statues in this green oasis have been so well preserved over the centuries! Also the rest of the castle is surprisingly well preserved. The gun house of the garden now houses the music academy. So with a bit of luck you'll catch a concert of beginning musicians in the castle garden! From the castle you are in no time on the Marktplatz where you will find many cosy restaurants, cafes and many beautiful buildings in baroque style!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Weikersheim is followed by Röttingen and Creglingen. After this you will travel with your camper van to real medieval atmospheres in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. When you walk through the old town, time seems to have come to a complete standstill: literally everywhere you can see the Middle Ages in the colourful half-timbered houses and at the parts of the very first city wall. The latter is also why the region itself calls the city the city of 42 treasures, because the shadow of the city is said to consist of 42 gate and weather towers! The city is also home to Germany's most famous Christmas museum, where you can learn all about Christmas in Germany, and of course you can also do all your Christmas shopping here. With such a famous museum, it's not surprising that the Christmas market here is very famous! The Christmas market here is also called 'Reiterlesmarkt' because of a legend about a horseman who gave gifts to people all over the world. Starting in the 15th century, this is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany!

In Rothenburg ob der Tauber you will spend the night at Parkplatz R2 or R3, both near the city centre.

Dinkelsbühl

After Schillingsfürst hedgehog bonbons - the delicacies of the castle café - and the Franconian bridal car, Feuchtwangen's landmark at the Fränkische Museum, it's time for Dinkelsbühl. Even in Dinkelsbühl the medieval atmosphere doesn't stop there. In fact, the town remained undamaged during the Second World War and is therefore known as one of the best preserved late-medieval town centres in Germany! A real draw of attention is the old defence wall, which is still very well intact. With its 2.5 kilometres you can take a nice city walk along it. Walking further into the centre, you'll come across beautiful historical heritage: mansions with impressive facades, the rigging house and the rococo-style castle of the Teutonic Order, a knighthood that took care of the wounded crusaders.

In the vicinity of Dinkelsbühl there are several camper sites. Wohnmobilstellplatz P2a is closest to the town centre.

Harburg

From Dinkelsbühl you drive on to Harburg. On the way you will pass Wallerstein - with the nearby Schloss Baldern in the middle of the greenery - and Nördlingen. Harburg is located in a special area: not far from here is the Ries Geopark. Almost 15 million years ago, an asteroid was struck here and it left a huge crater behind. At the information centre you can learn everything about this area. You can also go out with a guide, who can tell you everything about the earth as you walk through this crater! Back in Harburg the following impressive thing awaits you: here you will find a beautiful medieval castle. This castle was already built in the 11th century. As you can admire the castle today, it has existed since the 18th century. As there are many long distance walks along Harburg - including the Frankish Way and the Via Romea - you can also enter the area for a wonderful walk along the banks of the Wörnitz, the river that flows peacefully through the town.

For Harburg it is best to spend the night at the next stop on Romantic Road: Donauwörth.

Augsburg

After Harburg you pass by Donauwörth, which, as its name suggests, lies on the Danube, and Rain - the city with so much greenery that it is also called the city of gardens. Augsburg is justifiably also called the northernmost city in Italy: it looks as if you've landed here in Italy on a warm summer's evening with an ice cream! The city has always known a lot of wealth, already in the Middle Ages it was an important financial centre in Europe. This wealth allowed the city to flourish during the Renaissance and that's where all the beautiful architecture comes from. Although much was damaged during the Second World War, much has been restored to its former glory! The Augsburg Cathedral, which was already built in the 11th century, and the Köpfhaus, which consists of several houses but has been converted into one. This is particularly striking because the houses all date from a different century. The city is also known as the city with the most holidays in Germany, not surprisingly also with its own public holiday! On the 8th of August every year, the Augsburg Hohens Friedensfest is celebrated, celebrating peace. The festival has its origins in the end of the Thirty Years' War, which took place in the first half of the 17th century. Every year there are several events around this date.

Rottenbuch

You are almost at the end of the route, but here too you will come across some real gems! From Augsburg you passed Friedberg, Landsberg am Lech, Hohenfurch, Schongai and Peiting. The surroundings of Rottenbuch, the Ammervalley, is a beautiful nature reserve! Here you can let off steam on foot or by bike. The Echelsbacher bridge is a well-known point in the valley. A wonderful point to visit - provided you don't suffer from fear of heights, because the bridge crosses the ravine at a height of 76 metres! In Rottenbuch, the monastery is the most famous landmark. After being uninhabited for a while, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians have lived here since 1963. The church that belongs to the monastery is beautiful, again you will find many baroque and rococo styles! Wherever you look, there is no lack of decoration here.

Schwangau

It is time for the next stop. On the way you will pass Wildsteig, Steingaden and Halblech. Between Steingaden and Halblech you will find the Wieskirche in the village of Wies. Because of the beautiful rococo murals this is highly recommended! After Halblech you will arrive at Schwangau. If you like castles, then you should be here during your camper trip through Germany! Here you will find two famous castles: Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle. At the site of Hohenschwangau Castle there used to be Schwanstein Castle. After it fell into disrepair due to the extinction of all its inhabitants, it was rebuilt in the 19th century. The castle as you see it today dates back to 1837. Perhaps you know the castle because of Louis II, who lived here for part of his youth! Neuschwanstein Castle may remind you of Disney Castle, and that's not surprising: this castle served as an inspiration for Disney! Louis II had the castle built, but unfortunately he died towards the end. Not long after, it was opened to the public. If you want to have a spectacular view of the castle, you should definitely go to the Marienbrücke! From here you can admire the castle in all its splendour. A wonderful last but one stop during your motorhome trip through Germany!

Füssen

Füssen is the final stop of this motorhome journey along the Romantic Road. Although Füssen is often skipped because Neuschwanstein Castle is seen as a real highlight, the town is definitely worth a visit. On the Lech you will find a beautiful castle! Here you will find the Hohe Sloss, which towers above the town centre of Füssen. Today it is home to the municipal photo gallery. In summer, enjoy the sun in the courtyard, and in winter it's a beautiful sight when the castle is completely covered in snow. In Füssen, another museum is housed in a special building: the Benedictine monastery St. Mang. This is where the Museum of Füssen is located. The museum is especially known for its violins. Of course you can also easily go out into nature from Füssen. For those who want to admire nature from a different perspective, there is the spectacular 480-metre tree crown path. From a height of 20 metres you have a wonderful view of the green surroundings and of course of the castles! There are plenty of lakes near Füssen, including the Alpsee and Weißensee. These lakes are beautifully surrounded by forests and here you can enjoy walking, cycling or swimming in the sea! A nice and especially relaxing end to your motorhome trip along the Romantic Road in Germany.
