Neuschwanstein

Louis II lived in Neuschwanstein Castle to avoid being surrounded by people. Just six weeks after his death, the castle was opened to the public so that debts could be paid off by the government. Today, the castle is extremely popular. Not only do thousands of visitors come to the castle every day, but Walt Disney was also a fan and used it as inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle in Disneyland in California. And that is not surprising with its fairytale appearance! The castle sits atop the hill and its white colour contrasts beautifully with the green surroundings. You can reach the castle on foot, but it is also possible to be driven up in a carriage. After your visit, you can go into the Ammergebirge, from where you can take beautiful photos of the castle at some points. Close to the castle, there is also the Hohenschwangau Castle, another gem in the area. A visit to both castles can easily be combined in one day.

Schwerin Castle

Schwerin Castle is sometimes called the 'Neuschwanstein of the North'. And rightly so! When you walk in, the castle immediately stands out with its many towers and the footbridge, because it is situated on an island in the Schwerin Lake. Today, it is home to the parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, after having been the residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in the past. The castle was built in the middle of the 19th century. A visit to the castle will take you completely into the 19th century atmosphere. Among other things, you will find portraits of all the dukes from the 14th to the 18th century. On the outside, the castle garden, an English landscape garden, is a must for a short walk. The ponds are inspired by the ponds at the French Versailles.
