Alpine road through Germany

Hit the mountains with your motorhome with the German Alpine Road!

Attention all nature enthusiasts! The German Alpine Road is jam-packed with high peaks, bright blue lakes and picturesque sights. The 450-km long road is Germany's oldest motorway route! The route is known for its motorhome-accesibility; there is no shortage of motorhome stopovers! Wake up in the green nature, and find yourself on one of the many stunning trails in no time. What are you waiting for?!

First stop: Lindau am Bodensee

We start our motorhome-trip at Lindau am Bodensee. This is an island in Germany's biggest lake, the Bodensee! We recommend you to check out the town of Lindau. With its enchanting sights and historical centre it is definitely worth a visit! Are you visiting Lindau in winter? Then you'll find a big christmas market in Lindau's harbour. Get yourself a glass of mulled wine and enjoy the views. You can stay with your motorhome at motorhome stopover Lindau, next to the water.

Once you get back on the road from Lindau, drive to the mountains of Allgäu via the ''Rohrach Anstieg''. This road offers fantastic views over the Allgäu mountains and the Voralberg. Stop at the Scheidegg-waterfalls and the town of Lindberg, which is also called ''Little Paris''. You can park your motorhome at Wohnmobilpark am Kurhaus, in Scheidegg.

The gorgeous Allgäu mountains

We continue through the Oberallgäu mountains. Here, we find the first stop of the day: viewpoint Paradise. Its name does not detract from its worth; here, you can enjoy fantastic panoramas of the Nagelfluhkette National Nature Park, the Austrian Vorarlberg and the Swiss Alps. We continue our trip to Oberstaufen, a skiing resort in winter, but an area with stunning hiking trails in summer!

From Oberstaufen, we head on tot the Große Alpsee, the biggest natural lake of the Allgäu mountains. Next up, we arrive in Immenstad, an ancient royal city with a gorgeous castle, lots of old squares and many other sights. We scoot past Sonthofen, to Bad Hindelang; this region is known as the most sunny region of Southern Germany. Park your motorhome at Wiesengrund Wohnmobilpark for a relaxing and peaceful stay in the middle of the mountains.

The renowned Oberjochpass

When you ascend your motorhome and hit the road to Oberjoch, you'll immediately stumble upon the curviest road of Germany: the Oberjochpass. With a mere 106 curves, you slowly travel up through the rural landscape with its mountains and adjacent towns. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the view for a little while before descending towards Wertach.

From Wertach, we travel to the Grüntensee, where you'll find many bike- and mountainbike trails. Together, these trails consist of 580-km of biking fun! To still your hunger after an intense ride, you could eat a typical dish from the Allgäu region: cheese-spätzle! This is a type of pasta with a lot of cheese. Continue your travels to Pfronten, where you can park your motorhome at Wohnmobilstellplatz Pfronten. The village is known for the healing powers of hay. Want to relax a little? Take a ''hay massage'' to get your muscles nice and loose.

You can park your motorhome at Camper's Stop.

We exit Füssen and the Allgäu area, which brings us to the Upper Bavaria region. Oberammergau hosts passion plays once every ten years. This tradition started in 1633. During the passion plays, the whole village re-enacts the last five days of the life of Jesus Christ. Over the mountain pass Ettaler Sattel, we descend to Oberau and Farchant in Werdenfelser Land. You'll drive on beautiful roads with views of mountains Alpspitze and Zugspitze and then reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here you can park your motorhome at Alpencamp Am Wank.
