The most beautiful places along the French west coast during your motorhome trip

On the west coast of France, you will find plenty of beautiful places to visit during your motorhome trip through France. Think of the port city of Le Havre, the city of Nantes where old and new go together perfectly or Bordeaux, where you can enjoy the most delicious wines both in and outside the city. These are highlights you should not miss during a motorhome trip along the French west coast.

Le Havre

Welcome to the largest city in Normandy: Le Havre! During the Second World War, the city was almost completely destroyed. There was not much left, but the city was successfully rebuilt. That is also the reason why the city is nowadays on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The name suggests that the harbours are extremely important for the city, and they certainly are! The docks of Le Havre are right in the middle of the city. Many ships used to leave here for trade. The Vauban Docks take you back into the city's port history. This used to be the warehouse for cotton and coffee. Today, you can enjoy a snack and a drink here or go shopping.

Besides the port, there are more beautiful sights in the city, including one of the largest squares in Europe: Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, on which, among other things, the city hall is located.

During your motorhome trip along the west coast of France, Normandy and Brittany are highly recommended. In this article you will read all about the highlights of these regions. Think of various places associated with the artist Monet, the famous chalk cliffs of Etretat and the 'city of museums' Rouen.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is not only a famous wine region but also a beautiful city. But: these two go very well together! In the city, you will find the Cité du Vin, a wine museum where you will learn everything about wine in an interactive way. In addition, there is an Urban Wine Trail through the city where you will come across various wine bars. Wine lovers will have a great time in this city. For one of the highlights of the city centre, you should go to Place de la Bourse. This is the famous 18th century square that you will often see in pictures of the city. In this square you will also find the Miroir d'Eau, a beautiful mist fountain that you can just walk through. In this water, you can see the reflection of the surrounding buildings, which makes it a very special fountain! If you want to see all the best places in the city, the UNESCO walking tour is recommended. The walk will take you past several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as there are almost 400 protected monuments in the city! You will pass the Place de la Brouse, mentioned earlier, but also the Grand Théâtre, which is beautiful on the outside with its columns and on the inside with its many murals!

Travelling on to the South of France by motor home? We will tell you about the highlights of the sunny south including the Camargue, Côte d'Azur and Marseille.

Brest

This port city is largely dominated by the ocean: a great deal of research into the Atlantic Ocean is carried out from here. Not surprisingly, two of the city's highlights are also dedicated to water. Océanopolis is one of the largest aquariums in Europe where you can learn everything about marine life and, for example, the food chain. Of course, you can also admire animals floating around in the water here. There is also a Naval Museum in the city. Apart from learning all about shipbuilding, you will also find out all about the castle in which the museum is located. If you feel like diving into the water after your visit, you can do so at the beaches near the centre.

Nantes

Old and new go together perfectly in Nantes. At the 15th-century Chateau des Ducs, for example, you can admire the imposing ramparts. Or visit the 19th century Passage Pommeraye, where you can admire the beautiful glass roofs and various columns. It almost seems as if you are in a museum instead of a shopping centre! On the other hand, the amusement park Les Machines de l'île is one of the modern hotspots. These old shipyards have now been transformed into large mechanical animals. The most famous of these is The Grand Elephant. You can sit on the back of this 12-metre-high elephant while the animal walks through the park and spouts water from its trunk. Very special! In the rest of the amusement park, you can find more of these special attractions.
