6 locations to visit on Halloween with the motorhome

Halloween, the eve of All Saints Day, is upon us again! There are plenty of locations to visit on Halloween. For example, take a special walk along the Caminito del Rey in Spain and discover the legends of the Black Forest. Or, closer to home, visit so-called 'ghost villages' in Groningen and Antwerp. These locations are among the most special to visit by motorhome on Halloween.  

In the Netherlands and Belgium, you can find several 'ghost villages'. These villages are completely deserted, but fully furnished. It could easily be haunted! In the Netherlands, the Marnehuizen in Groningen is a must for a visit. This is the largest military training village in the Netherlands. No-one lives here, but it does look very real: the streets are littered with rubbish bins and cars, and there are also shops and a school. It is very bizarre to see such an empty village! Because it is a military training area, you are not allowed inside. However, there is a walking route along the site, so you can take a peek at this special village!

The Belgian ghost village Doel, near Antwerp, is also very special. It used to be a thriving industrial village, but that changed at the end of the 1960s when plans were made to expand the port of Antwerp. Over the years, the village became increasingly empty. There are now only about 20 inhabitants left, compared to almost 1300 before the village began to empty. In the village, you will find many empty houses that have been spray-painted with graffiti. Here and there, loose objects can also be found on the street. You are not allowed to enter the houses, but even from the outside, this village looks spooky! That makes it a perfect destination for a camper van during Halloween.

Near Marnehuizen you can spend the night in Lauwersoog, among other places. For a visit to Doel, you can stay the night in Antwerp.

The Black Forest is full of myths and legends and is therefore the perfect location to visit with a motorhome during Halloween. For example, the Mummelsee is said to be home to water nymphs who used to help the villagers with their daily chores. According to various myths, water nymphs help to protect rivers, lakes and other water sources. There was also a monastery on Fremersberg, where monks would catch spirits and put them in so-called poltergeist graves. And these are only a few of the many myths and legends of the area! The many castles and valleys in the area also make it feel like stepping into a fairy tale.

During your visit to the Black Forest by motor home, you can take the most beautiful autumn walks and bicycle tours from your motor home. In addition, the area is full of charming villages and towns, such as Freiburg, which is a good base for exploring the nature. The medieval city towers, among other things, are worth admiring here.

In the Black Forest, you can spend the night at the farmer's home at the camper site Wanglerhof.

The Millau Viaduct runs across the River Tarn near Millau in France. With 343 metres this is the highest bridge in Europe, this is even higher than the Eiffel Tower! You should therefore not be afraid of heights when you drive over the bridge, which makes it a real location for daredevils! The construction started at the end of 2001 and it was put into use in 2004. As well as driving over it with your camper van, you can also hire a canoe to go under it. There is also a visitor's centre at the bridge where you can learn all about the development of the viaduct. From here, you also have a great view of the impressive structure!

If you want to take a closer look at the viaduct, you can do so at the stop at l'Aire de Vision on the Causse de Brocuéjouls and in the village of Payre. Payre is especially known for its unusual cave dwellings. In addition, the Gorges du Tarn is a beautiful gorge a short distance from Millau. Here and in the rest of the area around Millau, you can enjoy hiking during your campervan trip!

In Millau you will spend the night at Camping-Car Park Millau.

Fort William lies at the foot of Ben Nevis and is not called the outdoor capital of Scotland for nothing. You can make lovely walks here, including to the top of Ben Nevis. At 1344 metres, this is the highest mountain peak in Great Britain. So it is best to take a whole day for your climb! The climb is known as an easy one because there is a wide footpath, so it's also doable for beginners.

As well as many walks through its rugged surroundings, Fort William is home to the remains of an old fort - the one that gave the place its name - and the West Highland Museum. Here you can learn all about the history of Fort William, the Jacobites and life in the Scottish Highlands.

For a visit to Ben Nevis, spend the night at Loch Katrine in Callander.

The Caminito del Rey, translated as the King's Path, is an exciting hiking route in the south of Spain. Here you walk above the gorge Desfiladero de los Gaitanes on a narrow wooden platform! This used to be known as one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world, but today this route can be walked independently. Since 2015, the footpath has been restored and is open to visitors. Previously, some daredevils also tried the path, but unfortunately this did not always end well. Thanks to the wide path, the anchors and the handrails, you can now walk the route safely. The route is about 7.7 kilometres long in total and is situated at an altitude of 100 metres. At some points the real daredevils can look down, because there are regular glass plates on the route through which you can look straight down into the canyon.

To visit the Caminito del Rey you will spend the night in El Chorro at Casa la Paz.

Near the French city of Carnac, you will find up to 3000 menhirs, large stones dating back to the Stone Age. The menhirs are spread over different locations around Carnac. The impressive stones have been here since around 5000 to 3000 BC. How people managed to move the stones back then is still a mystery today. The function of the stones is also unknown. It is assumed that the stones have to do with the position of the sun and the moon or that it is a kind of calendar. You can admire the menhirs on a walk along the various locations during your motorhome trip.
