The Northern Lights are known as a spectacular light show that you can witness for free thanks to Mother Nature! There are numerous locations where you can admire this wonder of nature during your motorhome trip. These are the most beautiful locations with a motorhome site nearby! Per country there are several organisations that track the chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis. Check this before you leave so that you have the best possible chance of seeing it!

Tromsø – Norway

In Tromsø, you don't have to look far to see the Northern Lights: you can admire the natural spectacle 'just' in the city! Despite the light pollution, it is clearly visible here. Apart from seeing the northern lights, there is much more to experience around this Norwegian town during your visit in a camper van. For example, you can spot orcas and whales, see wild reindeer and go on a snowshoe hike. The centre of Tromsø also offers plenty to do. You can admire beautifully coloured houses in the harbour. The Ice Sea Cathedral is also a must. This church has a modern look and is largely made of stained glass.

Unfortunately there is no motor home park in Tromsø. However, it is possible to spend the night in the area with the camper van, for example in Hatteng.

Kiruna – Sweden

Kiruna is Sweden's northernmost city. Here you will find plenty of opportunities to see the Northern Lights during your motorhome trip. You can of course do this on foot, but what about a tour on skis, with a dog sledge, on snow shoes or with a snow scooter? In the rest of the area, you can go for lovely walks. There is also good fly fishing. And even if you don't plan a husky tour to admire the northern lights, it is recommended to plan a husky tour during the day to admire the snowy landscape!

In Kiruna, you can spend the night at a motorhome stopover at a restaurant.

When to take the motorhome to see the northern lights?

The northern lights are best seen in the autumn and winter months. If the night is cold and the sky clear, you have a good chance of spotting the northern lights. For this to happen, there must be little light pollution and increased solar activity.

Kakslauttanen – Finland

This location in Finland is known for its ability to see the Northern Lights 200 days a year. Time to visit during your motorhome trip! Kakslauttanen is also just outside Urho Kekkonen National Park. This is the second largest national park in the country. The national park is known to be perfect to visit by motorhome. There are several car parks around the park from where you can head out into nature for a walk.

In Kakslauttanen there is no camper village, but you can spend the night at Nomadic Naali in Inari.

The Cairngorms – Scotland

Spotting the Northern Lights (or in Scottish 'the Mirrie Dancers') in Scotland? Yes, it is definitely possible! There are several locations at the same latitude as popular aurora locations in, for example, Norway. The Cairngorms is one of them. This national park is bursting with mountains, forests and cosy villages. Five of the six highest mountains in the UK are in the national park. If you want to climb them in the same period as you come to see the Northern Lights, you should expect a (very) challenging climb! Some of the best locations in the park for watching the Northern Lights are The Cairngorm Mountain car park and Feith Musach, which is near Tomintoul.
