In the middle of the historic center of Avignon, you'll find Palais des Papes. This is the largest Gothic structure in Europe! Between 1352 and 1376, this palace served as the residence of the Pope. In this time the Pope did not reside in Rome, but in Avignon. Chances are that Avignon is therefore called the Rome of France. Discover a piece of history at Pont Saint-Bénézet. This bridge is also known as Pont d'Avignon. In the 12th century, this was the only fixed riverbank connection between Lyon and the Mediterranean Sea. The bridge was 915 meters long and had no less than 22 arches. Here you will find one of the most famous antique markets in all of France. Every Saturday, you can admire the best second-hand items here. The market starts at 06:00 and ends at 15:00.

Have you seen enough culture? Then walk towards Rocher des Doms. This is the highest point of Avignon! Here you will find Le Jardin des Doms, a beautiful city park. In this park you can completely relax. Take a walk through this green park along many trees, special plants and a beautiful pond. Once you sit down on one of the many benches you can enjoy a panoramic view over the river Rhone and the
city center.
