Motorhome route Austria: from Salzburg to Vienna

Austria: the country of the most delicious schnitzels, the world-famous composer Mozart, the most impressive nature and historic cities. All things you should definitely not miss during your motorhome trip through this beautiful country. For example, drive with the motorhome along splashing waterfalls, the most idyllic villages in the middle of the mountain landscape or visit countless attractions in the capital Vienna. We have put together a motorhome route of Austria for you. Would you like to read it?

1. Salzburg: the city of Mozart

We start our motorhome tour of Austria in Salzburg. This city is situated on the Salzach river. Especially for the historic city center, you should really stop by in your motorhome in Salzburg. The city center is on the UNESCO world heritage list. The center is built in a baroque architectural style and for this reason the city is nicknamed: 'baroque jewel on the edge of the Alps'. The most famous sights of Salzburg can be seen from afar. This is the Hohensalzburg Castle. A cable car takes you to this fairy-tale castle. Take a guided tour through the old dining hall or take the stairs to the highest point. From here you have a magnificent view over the city! Salzburg is not only known for its old city center, but is also the birthplace of the world-famous composer Mozart. He also left his mark on the city.

2. Salzburg - Hallstatt

After a camperstop in Salzburg, it is time to visit Hallstatt. You reach Hallstatt after about an hour's drive by motorhome. This village with only +/- 800 inhabitants is unprecedentedly popular! People from all over the world were so impressed, that the village was exactly rebuilt in China. After this time, the village is an attraction for tourists. There is plenty to see and do in Hallstatt. For example, you can visit the salt mines of Hallstatt. Centuries ago, salt was precious and for centuries salt was mined in Hallstatt. During your visit to the salt mines you will learn all about the history of the salt mines, go underground to the area where the miners did their work and take a ride in the mine train. Another special outing is the Beinhaus von Hallstatt. Here you will find more than 600 hand-painted skulls of old inhabitants of the city. During your visit you will find out why they do this. It is also wonderful to take a boat trip and see the city from the water.

3. Hallstatt - Zell am See

The next camperstop is Zell am See. This is a Valhalla for winter sports enthusiasts. The super high mountains in this area are perfect for skiing or snowboarding. Although Zell am See is primarily known as a winter sports destination, you can stay here with the motorhome all year round. Especially if you like hiking, Zell am See is highly recommended! The mountainous surroundings are perfect for hiking and you will find numerous unique hiking trails. Hike for example over the high mountain Schmittenhöhe or enjoy a beautiful walk around the Zellersee. In the area you will find several gondolas that will take you up! Another fun to-do during your camperstop in Zell am See is an afternoon at Lake Zell. At this freshwater lake you can enjoy the summer. Spread out your towel and relax at this lake or rent a canoe.

4. Zell am See - Bad Kleinkircheim

Time for some relaxation in Bad Kleinkircheim. This village has been awarded the certificate "alpine wellness area". There is a culture of wellness here and there are many thermal baths. The largest wellness center is "Thermal Römerbad". This wellness center is no less than 12,000 m² with 13 saunas, 5 thermal pools and a massage center. Also in Therme St. Kathrein on the outskirts of the village you can completely relax. In addition to relaxation you can also take lovely walks in the mountains. There are several cable cars that take you to the mountain. From here many hiking trails start! Also, about 20 minutes drive from Bad Klein kircheim you will find a national park called "Nockberge". This national park has an area of 184.3 km ². Here you will find many different plants and animals. You can choose to hike here, but another fun must-do is the Nockalmstrasse. This is one of the most beautiful alpine roads in the sunny state of Carinthia. The road starts in Innerkrems and ends in Ebene Reichenau. Drive this road with the motorhome and discover all the beauty along the way!

5. Bad Kleinkircheim - Graz

Welcome to Graz! This is the second largest city in Austria. Strangely enough, many people do not know this nice city. Too bad, because this city has a lot to offer. Park your motorhome at Reisemoibl Stellplatz Graz and explore the nice city center of Graz. There are numerous cultural attractions here on the UNESCO World Heritage List. One sight you can't avoid during your camperstop in Graz is the Schlossberg. This mountain with a castle and the 16-century bell tower can be seen from afar. It is a tough climb to the top, but once you have reached the top you will be rewarded with a panoramic view over the city. Are you a real culture lover? Then a visit to the Arnold Schwarzenegger should definitely not be missed. This museum is entirely devoted to the greatest movie star and former governor. He was born in a small village near Graz and his parental home is now a museum! Graz is also the place to taste Austrian delicacies. Get to know Austrian cuisine at one of the markets or in a typical Austrian restaurant.

6. Graz - Vienna

It is already time for the last stop of your motorhome route. We do this in the capital of Austria, Vienna! This is by far the most important city in Austria. It is therefore not surprising that almost two million people live here. You will get bored here by the large number of attractions. From museums and impressive parks to historic churches! This city is also known as the music city of Europe! World famous composers like Mozart and Beethoven worked here. During your camperstop in Vienna you will see a lot of this. One of the highlights of Vienna is Schloss Schönbrunn. This is the most visited sight in Vienna! Here you will feel like a king. The history of this fairy-tale palace goes back a long time. In 1559, the emperor at the time ordered the construction of a hunting lodge, and over the years it has been further expanded. Today it is a huge building with up to 1441 rooms and a beautiful garden. Discover the other attractions of the city on foot or rent a bike.
