Scotland's most beautiful movie and TV locations in one motorhome itinerary!

The gorgeous Scottish landscapes have long been featuring in numerous popular movies and TV-shows, but it is, of course, even more impressive to visit these locations in real life! ''Set-jetting'', travelling to movie and TV-show locations, is 2023's biggest travel trend! Therefore, a trip to the most beautiful locations from films or series in Scotland should definitely not be missed in the coming year. In this article, you will find a 4-day motorhome itinerary for a cinematic trip through Scotland!

This motorhome itinerary starts and finishes in the Scottish capital: Edinburgh. The whole route spans across 345 miles, which roughly translates to 555 kilometres. We advise you to take 4 to 5 days to drive the whole itinerary, so you'll have the time to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and sights.

As mentioned before, our itinerary starts in Edinburgh. About 10 kilometres from the Scottish capital, in the Midlothian region, lies the Rosslyn Chapel. This chapel was funded in the 15th century, and the gorgeous architecture has been an inspiration for writers, poets and filmmakers ever since.

Rosslyn Chapel rose to worldwide fame after it appeared in the Da Vinci Code, a film that premiered in 2003. The mysterious and magical chapel fits the movie perfectly, since the antagonists Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) try to solve a difficult mystery in the movie.

After visiting the chapel, travel for a while to end up at The Fallkirk Wheel. This motorhome stopover has all the sanitary facilities that you need, and is thus the perfect pit-stop for a good night's sleep.

Besides being a historically significant place, Doune Castle also serves as Castle Winterfell in Game of Thrones and Castle Leoch in Outlander. Above all, the castle is featured a lot of times in the 1975 classic: Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This 14th-century castle has many faces, and there are lots of beautiful things to see and explore in the interior of the castle.

From the hill which the castle stands on you'll have a wonderful view over the broad landscapes full of forests and rivers. Inside the castle, you can admire gorgeous ballrooms, a courtyard and a music gallery.

You can stay the night at The Cabin at Loch Lubnaig. This motorhome stopover is nicely located close to the water, and is open all year round!

On the third day of our motorhome itinerary, a lot of movie locations are waiting for you! The itinerary continues to the Scottish Highlands, where the Glen Etive Road is waiting for you. This road is known to be one of the most beautiful roads in Scotland. It should be no surprise, then, that this road served as the set of James Bond: Skyfall.

Then follow the shores of Loch Ness until you arrive in Fort William. This place is known for its impressive landscapes, the centrepiece of which is Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain. In Fort William, you could take yourself on a climb up Ben Nevis, but it's just as nice to settle down in a pub and marvel at landscapes that were seen in the background of films like Braveheart and Highlander!

Perhaps one of the most famous locations in all of this list: Glenfinnan Viaduct, better known as the bridge from the Harry Potter film series over which the Hogwarts Express leaves for Hogwarts. Be sure to stop here to watch the almost magical steam train go by. You can stay overnight with your motorhome at Glennfinnan.

The popular Netflix series The Crown has many amazing filming locations, one of which is Ardverikie Estate! On day 4 of this itinerary, you'll leave towards the east of Scotland, to ultimately end up at this gorgeous estate. Not only the estate - or should we say castle - is breathtakingly gorgeous, the environment surrounding Ardverikie Estate is beautiful as well!

From Ardverikie Estate you'll travel south towards Glenshee, to ultimately end up in Spittal of Glenshee Balmoral Castle. This beautiful estate has been the British Royal Family's residence in the Scottish Highlands for a long time, but it has also been used as a filming location for the Oscar-awarded movie The Queen, which is a biopic of the life of the British Queen.

You can stay the night at Lochore Meadows Country Park, a motorhome stopover that is located in the greenery.

On the last day of your trip, you''ll return to the Scottish capital. There's another gorgeous movie location here, one from a very popular movie, namely Avengers: Infinity War! Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile served as background for several fighting scenes in this world-renowned action movie.

Besides beautiful architecture, you can also enjoy nice shops, cosy restaurants and historical sights such as the St Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile. Whatever you might do, you will definitely enjoy yourself on the last day of this trip in this gorgeous historical city.
