3x city break in Germany with a motorhome

Germany is bursting with historic cities that are perfect for a city break with your motorhome! With this selection of city trips in Germany, you will pass beautiful art, culture and history. All cities offer overnight stops by camper van so you can explore the city at your leisure!

Dresden

Dresden is the perfect motorhome destination in Germany for architecture and art lovers. The striking thing about the city's architecture is that it largely dates from the period after the Second World War. Many buildings were destroyed during this war. Some buildings, including the Frauenkirche, have been restored with original parts. This makes it a special city for a city trip with a camper van! The Zwinger Palace is also beautiful. This 18th-century castle was built as a leisure palace for August the Strong. He was elector of Saxony. In the Second World War, the palace was badly damaged, but after being rebuilt, it now houses several museums, including the Porcelain Museum with more than 20,000 porcelain pieces, and the State Museum of Zoology. The collection of this museum includes skeletons and insects.

Besides the architecture, you will also find plenty of art in the city. In the Residenzschloss, for example, you will find the Grüne Gewölbe museum, which is already an attraction from the outside. Here you can admire the former royal treasury in the treasure room. Although it is not real art, the cheese shop Pfunds Molkerei has been named the most beautiful cheese shop in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. Since the interior of the cheese shop is beautiful, it is definitely worth a visit!

If you like to explore nature during your city trip in Dresden, then Saxon Switzerland is a beautiful nature reserve to visit. Here, you will find the Bastei, a beautiful rock formation that you can admire from the Basteibrücke.

There are several camper stops in Dresden, including Wohnmobilstellplatz am Blüherpark.

Bonn

You may know Bonn as the city of Beethoven. The world-famous composer was born here in 1770. In the Beethoven House you can learn everything about his life during your city break in a motorhome in Germany. You can also listen to his compositions in the Beethovenhalle. The city is also sometimes called the art capital of Germany, which is not surprising with the many art museums here! You will find the Kunstmuseum Bonn, where you will mainly find art from after 1945, and the Museum of German History. Furthermore, the Kürfürstliches Schloss will not escape your notice in the centre. This former palace of the princes of Cologne is now part of the University of Bonn and was built in beautiful Baroque style! Good to know is that Bonn was the capital of Germany from 1949 to 1999. During this period, East and West Germany were divided. After the Berlin Wall fell, it was decided to make Berlin the capital. It was not until 1999 that this actually happened. Today, there are still several government institutions in Bonn, including the Ministry of Defence.

Just outside Bonn, you can spend the night at the camperstop An der Rheinaue.

Hanover

Hanover is a lesser-known city for a city trip by camper van in Germany. Yet this city should not be missing from your list! You will find the Herrenhäuser Gärten here. These are four separate gardens, but they are adjacent to each other, making it seem like one big garden. In the gardens you will find beautiful golden statues, a maze and the castle, which used to be a summer residence. George II was King of Great Britain and lived here. Therefore, the English style of the gardens will not surprise you!

The Neues Rathaus is another beautiful building in the city. This is one of the few buildings that survived the bombings of the Second World War. If you go to the top of the building, you will have a wonderful view of the city! Near this castle is the Maschsee. Here you can rent a boat or canoe in the summer to enjoy the beautiful weather from the water! Around the lake you can also take lovely walks and bike rides.

In Hannover, you can spend the night at the camper stop Hannover.

Please note: In Bonn and Hannover, an environmental sticker is required. These environmental zones are also called 'Umweltzones' and are intended to improve air quality. The environmental stickers can be ordered online.
